Roomskills MyMusic for Amazon Echo

Hello, nice to see you here.

So you have just installed our Alexa skill or found us on the internet and want to know how to set this up. Yes, here is the right place to look for information on how to get our Alexa skill up and running to listen to your own music collection on Amazon Echo speakers.

Now you have your new Echo speaker and you are unable to play your own music collection on it?

No problem, this is what Roomskills MyMusic Echo is for!

In order to play your own music on the Echo speakers, you have to activate the skill 'Roomskills MyMusic' in the Alexa App and let it guide you through the process of setting up your music server and connecting the music server to Roomskills. If you want to know a little bit more, see a list of the possible voice commands or just want to see what it is all about - have a look below.

Have fun setting it up.

  • Setup Roomskills-MyMusic Skill

  • Setup of the Roomskills-MyMusic Skill

Just search for the skills "Roomskills MyMusic" in your Alexa App and use the same email address as used in Roomskills or use your Amazon Account to authorize the skill.

Then start the skill by using the voice command

    Alexa, open music collection

and you will be guided through the installation process.

After a short introduction you will be asked to setup the music server. For this you have to go to our Website and there you find details on how to setup the music server and how to connect it to the Roomskills service.

  • Setup of the music server

  • Option 1: The easy way - Buy a pre-installed music server from us

To play your own music with the Roomskills MyMusic Echo Skill you need to have a local music server up and running to serve the music to the Echo speakers. The setup of the server takes some time and therefore we provide a service to setup the server for you. Just buy a preinstalled server in our shop. You find the shop once you have logged into Roomskills.

After you have received the server you need to copy your music to the USB stick and plug the USB-Stick back into the server. In order for the music server to find the music, the so called MP3 Tags for artist, name of the song, album artist and album name have to be correct and stored in the mp3 files.

Then the server needs to be connected to your router or local network and be connected to the power supply.

After the server has been started it should be reachable via the address.

    http://max2play

And the music server itself should be reachable via the address.

    http://max2play:9000

And the Roomskills Local Connect configuration page should be reachable via.

    http://max2play:32655

To configure Roomskills Local Connect open the Roomskills Local Connect configuration page and login with your login data, then select the MyMusic Echo service and enter the server data, as follows:

    • LMS Server address: address of the Logitech Media Server, check your browser window to verify
    • LMS Server HTML Port: 9000, check your browser window to verify
    • LMS Server CLI Port: 9090, if it doesn't work check the settings of your Logitech Media Server
    • and no user password, unless you added this.

After you have added this data the service should be visible as active.

That was all. The music server is set up. If not already done, now is the time to activate the Roomskills MyMusic skill in the Alexa App. You find a short description on how to do this below.

  • Option 2: Use an existing Logitech Media Server and connect it to Roomskills

If you have already a Logitech Media Server with your music collection on it, or you want to install it yourself by using an installation package from

    http://downloads.slimdevices.com/nightly/?ver=7.9

    bzw.

    http://downloads.slimdevices.com/nightly/?ver=8.0

all that is left to do is to connect your Logitech Media Server to our Roomskills Service. And this is done by installing the tool Roomskills Local Connect. At Products > Roomskills Local Connect you find a detailed description on how to install Roomskills Local Connect for all the different systems like Windows, macOS Linux, Docker etc. . Please follow one of these options to get Roomskills Local Connect up and running.

    • and no user password, unless you added this.

After you have added this data the service should be visible as active.

  • Option 3: Raspberry Pi with MAX2PLAY

Raspberry Pi with Max2Play: The installation on a Raspberry Pi mit Max2Play is simple as well. The description here maybe looks to be long, but it is just a detailed description. In our experience it is the easiest and best solution to get started with your own music server for MyMusic Echo.

    At the address

    https://www.max2play.com/

you find the area Download and there you find complete images, that can be used to setup the Raspberry PI as a music server.Just download an image there.

You have to write the image to an SD Card, that you enter into the Raspberry Pi.

It is also a good idea to store your music on a separate USB disk, which you also put into the Raspberry PI befire configuring the music server.

After inserting the SD card with the image, entering the USB Stick with the music and connecting the Raspberry PI with a cable to the Internet Router you can connect the Raspberry Pi to power and it will automatically power up and start MAX2PLAY. After a short while you can open a web browser and open the address:

    http://max2play/

Here you will find the MAX2PLAY configuration page.

First you should open the tab 'Setup/Reboot' and click on 'Update MAX2PLAY' to update MAX2PLAY.

On the tab 'Filesystem Mount' you can see, if the USB Stick with the music can be reached.

Next you can setup the Logitech Mediaserver. First open the tab 'Squeezebox Server' and select the desired version. Then click on 'Start Installation of Squeezebox Server' to install the music server.

When asked for the folder for the music just select the music folder on the USB stick under '/media/usb0'.

Then you have to select a folder for the playlists, where a folder on the USB stick can be used as well.

    That's it.

Now the music server collects all the required information about the music stored on the USB stick.

Next we have to install and setup Roomskills Local Connect. Roomskills Local Connect is required to establish a secure connection between your music server and the Roomskills service.

In order to install Roomskills Local Connect on MAX2PLAY you copy the following link

  • Additional Information

  • Using MyMusic with separate Alexa Account in one household

If you want to use Roomskills Local Connect with separate Alexa Accounts in one household you can share the service from one account to the other. Both Alexa users have to have a coresponding user on Roomskills and both Users need to have the MyMusic Alexa skill activated. Then you open the service details of the service that should be shared and enter the email address of the user that should get access to the service. Under the user that should get access to the service you create a new service from the type "Shared Service" and enter the email adress of the giving user.

  • What is the difference between the packages "Free", "Basic" or "Advanced" in regard to MyMusic Echo

If you really want to play your music on Echo speakers you should have the package "Basic". You can still play single songs in the package "Free", but thats about it. If you want to share your music library with more than one other user you need to have the package "Advanced". You can always change your packages at the menu item "Account" and the remaining time is adjusted accordingly. The packages can be ordered under the menu item Account as well.

  • Playing music from your library from outside your local network

In general you can play your local music collection from outside your network. But in order to do so you need to make Roomskills Local Connect accessible from outside your network. This is done by a so called port forwarding on your Internet Router. We suggest, that you only setup the port forwarding if you have some experience in Network Security and know what you are doing, when opening access to Roonskills Local Connect though your Internet Router. Roomskills Local Connect is set-up in a way, that the music from the music server is provided only for a few hours through the URL only given to the Echo player. Therefore there are not much reasons not to expose the required port to the internet, but still you should know what you are doing to make sure there is nothing else exposed to the Internet through the process.

    Here the required steps:

    • First you have to make sure your Internet Router has a fixed address in the internet. The key word here is DynDNS. A lot of Routers provide the funktionality, so please find out how to establish a DynDNS address for your router.
    • Then you have to forward the port 32656 from the outside to the port 32656 on the computer running Roomskills Local Connect.
    • The last step is to configure Roomskills Local Connect to use the external address by entering the address in the form 'http://<DynDNS-address of the router>:32656' into the field Local Connect App Alexa URL.

That was it - have fun using MyMusic Echo from outside your local network!
