Roomskills MyMusic for Amazon Echo - Step-by-Step Guide

Hello, nice to see you here.

So you have just installed our Alexa skill or found us on the internet and want to know how to set this up. Yes, here is the right place to look for information on how to get our Alexa skill up and running to listen to your own music collection on Amazon Echo speakers.

To get your own music on the Echo speakers, you need to setup a music server, put your music on the server and connect the server to the Roomskills service. You find the information on how to set up the music server in the section "Music Server".

In order to play the music from the server on the Echo speakers you have to install the Roomskills MyMusic Echo skill in your Alexa App. You find the information on how to do this and as well an overview of the possible voice commands in the section "MyMusic Skill".

If you want to use the music library with more than one Alexa User in your household, you can share the service within Roomskills. First you add the email address of the user who should be able to use the music library in the details page of the service. Then you have to create a service of the type 'Shared Service' under the Roomskills account of the additional user and install the skill.

Have fun setting it up.

  • Expert Guide to setup Roomskills MyMusic Echo

  • Short setup guide for experienced users

Here a short setup guide for experienced users and IT experts.

    • Setup and Configuration of the Music Server
      • The Logitech Mediaserver is used as music server. There are several ways of installing the Logitech Media Server on QNAP or Synology NAS Systems or on a Raspberry Pi following the instructions on https://www.picoreplayer.org/. Currently our plugin does not work on LMS systems installed on Windows systems, but it should work fine on Unix-based systems. If you prefer you can also buy a Raspberry Pi with a nice case and piCorePlayer ready installed via our shop. In addition you get a USB Drive ready to store your music. The Pi will be ready to work directly with Roonskills MyMusic Echo. After the setup of the music server the following steps have to be performed to setup the music server to work with Roomskills:
        • First you have to register and login into Roomskills.
        • After logging in into Roomskills a new service of the type "MyMusic Echo" needs to be created.
        • To connect the music server with Roomskills, the Roomskills Plugin has to be installed. In order to access the plugin you have to add the URL

as additional repository on the music server.

        • Then you have to go to the configuration page of the Roomskills plugin and follow the 3 steps described there. You have at least to enter the Roomskills user name and password and restart the server. If you are using Amazon Login, to login into Roomskills, you can use the token provided on the set-up page of the Roomskills service as password instead.
        • If the configuration of the music server has been changed or password protected, this has to be adjusted on the configuration page of the plugin as well.
        • After the server has been restarted you can check on the configuration page, if the setup was succesfull.
      • Activate and use the Roomskills-MyMusic Alexa Skill
        • Search in the Alexa Skill Store the skill "Roomskill-MyMusic" and activate it. It is necessary to connect the skill to the same Amazon User, that has the same email address as it is used in Roomskills.
        • After the last steps, the setup is complete and you can use the service following the voice commands described in the section "MyMusic Skill".
  • Setup of the music server

  • Option 1: The easy way - Buy a pre-installed music server from us

To play your own music with the Roomskills MyMusic Echo Skill you need to have a local music server up and running to serve the music to the Echo speakers. The setup of the server takes some time and therefore we provide a service to setup the server for you. Just buy a preinstalled server in our shop. You find the shop once you have logged into Roomskills.

After you have received the server you need to copy your music to the USB stick and plug the USB-Stick back into the server. In order for the music server to find the music, the so called MP3 Tags for artist, name of the song, album artist and album name have to be correct and stored in the mp3 files.

Then the server needs to be connected to your router or local network and be connected to the power supply.

After this we need to find out the local IP address of the server. One option is to check your router to see if the new server is listed there. Or you can use your smartphone and the App fing to list all devices in your local network. You should find the server under the name "piCorePlayer".

    After entering the address

    http://<Adresse>:9000 (e.g. http://192.168.2.119:9000)

in your web browser you should find the starting page of the music server.

Then you click on the text "Configuration" on the lower right corner to reach the configuration page.

With a click on the button "Start search" on the bottom of the page the music from the USB Stick is searched for all the music. This will take a little bit of time. While you are waiting for the music collection to be read by the server, you can set up the Roomskills MyMusic Echo service on Roomskills next.

First you have to login to the Roomskills Website on https://www.roomskills.com/apps. Then you have to click on "Service" and then select the entry "MyMusic Echo" and click on the button "+".

Then set the name and klick on 'OK' to save the service. If you use Amazon Login to enter Roomskills you have to remember the token given on the service definition page. It will be needed later, when setting up the plugin on the music server.

Now you can finish the setup of the Roomskills plugin on the music server. To reach the plugin configuration page, you need to click on the tab "Plugins".

In the new windows scroll down to the line "Roomskills" and click on the text "Preferences" on the right side.

Then you have to go to the configuration page of the Roomskills plugin and follow the 3 steps described there. You have at least to enter the Roomskills user name and password and restart the server. If you are using Amazon Login, to login into Roomskills, you can use the token provided on the set-up page of the Roomskills service as password instead.

If the configuration of the music server has been changed or password protected, this has to be adjusted on the configuration page of the plugin as well.

After the server has been restarted you can check on the configuration page, if the setup was succesfull.

That was all. The music server is set up. The next step is to download and enable the Roomskills MyMusic skill in Alexa. You find a short description on how to do this below.

  • General information on setting up a music server yourself

There are several ways to setup the music server. The music server is based on the Logitech Media Server (short LMS). The LMS can be installed almost on every computer, but a music server makes most sense, if it can stay turned on the whole time, ready to serve the music to the players. The installation packages can be found at

    http://downloads.slimdevices.com/nightly/?ver=7.9

    or

    http://downloads.slimdevices.com/nightly/?ver=8.0

Currently our necessary plugin is not compatible with LMS systems running on Windows or MacOS computers, but it should work fine on the other platforms, especially Unix-based systems. Possible convenient options are NAS Systems, which are already used in many households. Another option is the Raspberry Pi computer, which does not consume a lot of electricity. For the Raspberry Pi exists a very good option from piCorePlayer at

    https://www.picoreplayer.org/

Please have a look at the options listed in the next section.

  • Option 2: QNAP NAS System
    • QNAP NAS: The installation on a QNAP NAS system is easy and done in 3 steps:
      • Add the QNAP club EU QPKG store to the QNAP App Center following the installation guide on https://www.qnapclub.eu/
      • Install the App "QLogitechMediaServer". This should be possible on almost all Qnap Models with the operating system version above QTS 4.0 (independent if ARM or Intel architekture)
      • Follow the installation steps and add your music library to the server. In order for the music server to find the music, the so called MP3 Tags for artist, name of the song, album artist and album name have to be correct and stored in the mp3 files.

In the next step we have to configure the Roomskills plugin on the music server.

    • First we have to setup the service on the Roomskills Website.
      • The easiest way to register is to login to Roomskills with your Amazon Account. This way you are registered automatically with your fist login via the button "Login with Amazon" on the login page (to the login page).
      • You can as well register by yourself following the procedure from the registration page (to the registration form). But if you want to use Alexa voice control later, you have to use the same email adress, that is used with the Amazon Account. After the registration the given email adress has to be confirmed by clicking on a link send to the email address by Roomskills.
      • To setup MyMusic in Roomskills you have to click on "Service" and then select the entry "MyMusic Echo" and click on the button "+".
      • Then set the name and klick on 'OK' to save the service. If you use Amazon Login to enter Roomskills you have to remember the token given on the service definition page. It will be needed later, when setting up the plugin on the music server.
    • Now we have to install and configure the plugin
      • Open the Logitech Media Server and click on "settings" (lower right corner)
      • Click on the tab, that is named "Plugins"
      • On the bottom of the page, where it says "Additional Repositories" add the URL
      • https://www.roomskills.com/lms-repo/repo.xml

to the available field and click on "Apply" at the bottom.

      • Now a new plugin is available called "Roomskills-Squeezebox-Plugin", please activate it and confirm the installation twice (once to confirm using the new repository and once to install the plugin).
      • When asked allow the server to be restarted.

That was all. The music server is set up. The next step is to download and enable the Roomskills MyMusic skill in Alexa. You find a short description on how to do this below.

  • Option 3: Synology NAS System

Synology NAS: The installation on a Synology NAS system is also easy. There is a package available, which is unfortunately outdated (Vs. 7.7.6), but there are ways to install a newer version (7.9.x), just follow the instructions, that can be found on the Internet.

In order for the music server to find the music, the so called MP3 Tags for artist, name of the song, album artist and album name have to be correct and stored in the mp3 files.
